Mark Zuckerberg and BYU Tech Forum

On March 25, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. I found out that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was going to speak at 11:00 a.m. at the Marriott Center on the campus of Brigham Young University. I was not going to miss the opportunity to hear and see Mark Zuckerberg in person.

This was the first time Zuckerberg had ever done an event like this. He even said that it was the largest group he had ever spoken to in person. The format of the event was as follows: Question and answer with questions pulled from 450 submitted via the BYU Facebook page.

My 7 Takeaways from Mark Zuckerberg

1. Mark moved Facebook to Silicon Valley to be surrounded by technology start up super stars, experts, and pros. He did say that to have a successful start up you don't have to necessarily do it in Silicon Valley.

2. When you start a company everyone you bring on the team needs to be great. That will be one of the keys to its success.

3. All of the problems Facebook is trying to solve are human problems. The human problem Facebook solves is helping people to stay connected and maintain meaningful relationships.

4. Mark Zuckerberg's advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to have passion, love what you are doing/building, and believe in what your are doing. If you are not passionate and don't love what your are doing when hard times come you will give up.

5. In 2008, when Facebook had 100,000,000 users Mark Zuckerberg did some self introspection around what passion would drive him and Facebook forward. To do this Zuckerberg took a month vacation to Europe. Upon his return, he knew where his passions for Facebook were most strong: 1. Help people have empathy for others. 2. Help people maintain meaningful relationships.

6. Facebook started peace.facebook.com to promote peace by building technology that helps people better understand each other.

7. When asked what type of people does Facebook look for when hiring?, Zuckerberg responded, "People who are really passionate. Those who are not O.K. with how the world is and want to play a role in making it better. We also look for individuals who have already done things that make the world a better place."

If you ever have a chance to hear Mark Zuckerberg speak don't pass up the opportunity. Do as Zuckerberg suggested, "Make sure you do something that your are passionate about and love doing."
