Brainstorming - 4 Rules to Think Free and Be Creative

Have you ever had a brainstorm session on your calendar? How did the session go? Did your creative juices start to flow? Did you feel the power of good brainstorming? or Did someone kill the vibe with a negative comment? I have been in good and bad brainstorming sessions. These are four truths I have experienced in creating a good brainstorming session:

Rule Number One: Set the right environment. This starts with meeting invite. Let everyone know the rules of the brainstorming session. Also, schedule the brainstorm session in a clutter-free room with a few clean whiteboards to capture ideas in a unrestricted manner.

Rule Number Two: Have an objective to the session. Brainstorming with purpose really helps focus the brainstorming session enabling creativity.

Rule Number Three: All ideas go. Sounds simple right? Most brainstorm sessions die when the first person says, "That idea won't work." Brainstorming is about one idea bouncing off another. Rule #1 to successful brainstorming: All ideas must go.

Rule Number Four: Set a time limit. Many times we hear, we are going to stay in here until we have the creative idea. Schedule the brainstorm session with a time limit. You can always have more sessions and some of the best ideas will come between sessions.

I had to privilege to work with a great team on this project. We made sure we obeyed the fours rules of brainstorming and below was the result of our combined effort.
